Canexel siding: everything to know before you choose it

Canexel is probably the siding we get asked about most across Montreal, Laval and the South Shore. The look of wood, without stripping it every seven years. We get the appeal.

But a lot of outdated information circulates about this product. Here is what the manufacturer's own documents actually say, and what we see on our job sites after 13 years.

What exactly is Canexel?

Canexel is an engineered siding made of high-density wood fibre. Boards are 3/8 of an inch thick and 12 feet long.

What sets it apart is the finish. The paint is thermosetting, applied in several coats and baked at very high temperature. That is what gives it its resistance to cracking and peeling.

This matters to you, because the warranty, the approved accessories and the authorized dealer network now all belong to Maibec. A claim goes to Maibec, not LP.

The 4 profiles sold in Quebec in 2026

The Maibec catalogue lists four profiles. Your choice changes the look, but also the installation direction and how many colours you can pick from.

Ridgewood D-5, the most common

A 12-inch board with a centre groove that makes it read as two 5-inch boards. It is the classic you see throughout residential neighbourhoods in Laval and the South Shore.

VStyle, for a contemporary look

The only profile that accepts both directions. Vertical installation visually stretches the facade, which completely changes the proportions of a bungalow.

What about the wood look?

The wood grain is moulded into the panel, not printed. That is what makes it convincing from the street. Up close, a trained eye sees the difference with real wood. We would rather be straight with you about that.

The 16 colours in the 2026 catalogue

Maibec offers 16 colours in two families: 9 two-tone and 7 solid. Two-tones add depth to the grain, solids give a cleaner, more modern result.

The 9 two-tones: Charcoal, Dark Roast, Scandinavian, Sandalwood, Acadia, Sierra, Barista, Cliffside, Timberwolf.

The 7 solids: Tundra, Mist Grey, Sand, Midnight Blue, Granite, Black, White.

Charcoal and Tundra are the two newcomers, launched in 2025. Charcoal remains in high demand on the island, often paired with a brick or stone base.

The 25/15/5 warranty, decoded

This is the section almost nobody will walk you through, and it is the most important one. “25-year warranty” does not mean what most people think.

25 years on the substrate, but prorated

The 25-year warranty covers exactly two defects: warping and delamination. Nothing else. Warping is precisely defined: at least 6.35 mm, or 1/4 inch, out of plane.

For the first 5 years, Maibec covers 100% of materials and labour.

From year 6 to year 25, two things change. Labour is no longer covered at all, and the amount paid drops by 5% each year. By year 25, it is worth zero.

15 years on the finish

Covers cracking, peeling and flaking of the factory paint. Normal fading is not covered, the document explicitly excludes it as attributable to normal weather exposure.

What the warranty does not cover

• Edge swelling and checking. The manufacturer acknowledges it happens to all wood products, and declines to cover it
• Siding in continuous contact with the ground, a deck, a dormer or a window sill
• Installation that does not follow the guide, or done without approved Maibec accessories
• Inadequate maintenance

Conditions to know before you sign

• Valid in Canada below the 55th parallel. Montreal, Laval and the South Shore are fully covered
• Product bought from an authorized Maibec CanExel dealer
• You must report the defect within 90 days of noticing it, and before any permanent repair
• Transferable to one subsequent owner only, no further
• The burden of proving the installation date is on you. Keep your invoice

None of this disqualifies Canexel. It is a good product. But a salesperson who tells you “it is warrantied 25 years” without mentioning the proration is not giving you the full picture.

Real maintenance, not marketing

You often hear that Canexel is zero maintenance. Maibec's official care guide opens with this sentence: Maibec CanExel products require regular and proper maintenance, failing which the warranty could be voided.

It is not demanding, but it is not nothing either. Here is what it means in practice.

What you have to do

• A visual inspection once a year
• A wash with a garden hose, at under 100 psi
• A soft-bristle brush, the kind you would use on a car
• Diluted mild detergent: 1/3 cup per 3 litres of water
• Keep an 8-inch clearance between the siding and flower beds or vegetation
• Check the sealant joints and redo them as soon as they harden or crack

What you must never do

• Pressure washer. Formally prohibited by the manufacturer
• Abrasive detergent
• Any product containing acid, ammonia or bleach

Homeowners coming from vinyl underestimate this one. Pulling out the pressure washer in spring is a reflex. On Canexel, it can cost you your warranty.

Yes, you will eventually need to repaint

The official guide is clear: paint erosion and fading are considered normal. When the finish shows wear, you must refinish it with a Maibec-approved product.

The manufacturer adds that you should not wait for the siding to deteriorate, because a badly damaged panel can be permanently ruined. No interval in years is published. The annual inspection is what decides.

Installation is where it fails

On our job sites, Canexel problems almost never come from the product. They come from installation. And there is a documented case that illustrates it better than any explanation.

So here is what installation requires:

• Vertical furring strips, running the full height of the wall
• The top and bottom of the strips left open, so the air gap ventilates
• A continuous weather barrier behind
• Approved Maibec accessories, otherwise the warranty is void

Quebec's Construction Code already covers this in articles 9.27.2.3 and 9.27.4, which require siding to limit infiltration from precipitation, capillary action, gravity and air pressure differences.

That is why we refuse to install Canexel over a wall whose weather barrier we have not verified. Our caulking team systematically goes over the junctions and openings before the finish work.

Canexel vs vinyl, fiber cement and real wood

We will compare on what is verifiable: the official warranties published by the manufacturers. The rest, lifespan and cold resistance, circulates widely in numbers but without a serious source behind it.

Canexel vs fiber cement

James Hardie fiber cement has the better warranty on paper: 30 years, not prorated on the substrate. It is also non-combustible, which Canexel is not.

In exchange, it is heavier, installation takes longer and it needs paint over the medium term. Both sit in the same material price range, the gap widens mostly at installation.

Canexel vs vinyl

Vinyl costs roughly four times less in materials. That is a real argument on a tight budget. But it still reads as plastic and it ages less gracefully.

Canexel wins on appearance and on perceived home value. For many homeowners, that is exactly what they are after.

When we recommend something else

If you want maximum longevity and the budget allows, we will point you to fiber cement. If you want real wood and upkeep does not scare you, Maibec. For a multi-unit or commercial building, steel.

What Canexel costs in Montreal in 2026

On materials, Canexel starts at $4.55/sq ft. Those are our own numbers, drawn from the projects we run in Montreal, Laval and the South Shore. Labour is added on top.

We publish that figure because we have it. What you find elsewhere online almost always comes from lead-generation sites copying each other, with no methodology and no date. Neither Maibec, nor CAA-Québec, nor the APCHQ publishes pricing for this product.

What moves the final price:

• The profile. The 9-inch Ced'R-Vue covers 7.75 sq ft per board versus 11 for the Ridgewood, so more boards for the same wall
• The condition of the existing wall. If the furring has to be redone entirely, that is the line item that climbs most
• Architectural complexity. Gables, dormers, many openings: more cuts, more sealant, more hours
• Access and height. A bungalow is not a three-storey that needs scaffolding
• Insulation. Often the right moment to redo it, since the wall is already open

The Rénoclimat grant

If you use the project to improve exterior insulation, Quebec's Rénoclimat program pays $450 to $3,750 for wall insulation.

Two conditions to remember. You have to insulate at least 20% of the total exterior wall area. And an energy evaluation is mandatory before and after the work, because the grant is calculated on the performance gap.

The amount drops to 75% for a semi-detached home or a corner row unit, and to 50% for a non-corner row unit. Since the parameters change, always confirm on Québec.ca before planning your budget.
